Version: Digital Download. Pre-Requisite: Completed Pre-Algebra (DIVE Math 8/7 or Algebra 1/2), or taken concurrently.
Due to the heavy emphasis on chemistry in today's high school biology courses, most colleges now require Integrated Physics and Chemistry in 9th grade instead of Physical Science. Colleges changed the name of the requirement because many physical science publishers were publishing Physical Science texts that were really an Earth/Space type science. These texts lack the chemistry and physics concepts required to succeed in upper level science courses. DIVE IPC meets these new requirements, providing excellent preparation for biology, chemistry, and physics courses.

Integrated Physics and Chemistry is an introductory chemistry and physics course that is designed to spark interest while building a firm foundation for advanced science courses. Topics include Science and Christianity, measurement of matter, atoms, the Periodic Table, nuclear chemistry, chemical bonds and reactions, acids and bases, Newton’s laws, work and simple machines, gases and thermodynamics, electricity and magnetism, and light. Based on the scientific method, the video labs have many fun, engaging activities that draw students in and inspire them to learn more.
Upon completion of DIVE IPC, students will be adept at working with the scientific method, developing lab skills that are above and beyond most of their peers. They will understand the importance of the energy sources used to power our world. Most importantly, students will have a better understanding of the laws God has woven into Creation. They will gain an appreciation for the rich Christian heritage that exists in science. With special emphasis on men like Isaac Newton and Michael Faraday, students will understand the importance of studying His Word and His Works as they seek to become good stewards of His creation.
This course can be used as an advanced or standard high school course. It includes a free Internet Textbook to complete reading assignments. If you prefer a traditional text we recommend either Bob Jones Physical World or Bob Jones Physical Science 4th edition. However, you can use any high school text. We have created a syllabus for each text that tells you exactly what to read each week. Please note: This is NOT the same course as Apologia's Physical Science which is an 8th grade earth and space science course referenced in the first paragraph, not an introductory chemistry and physics course.
WHAT'S INSIDE? EVERYTHING YOU NEED!
WEEKLY ASSIGNMENT CHART
A syllabus, or weekly assignment chart, provides lesson plans for the entire year.
VIDEO LECTURES TEACH STEP BY STEP
Weekly video lectures teach complex concepts step by step on a digital blackboard. During the lecture, students take notes and work interactively, just like a live classroom. Connecting Scripture to science, Dr. Shormann teaches from a Creation Worldview. He inspires students to DIVE deeper into science and Scripture by teaching that science is a tool for understanding God and the purpose and pattern evident in Creation. After the lecture, a worksheet is completed which provides an opportunity to apply the new concepts.
VIDEO LABS SPARK STUDENT INTEREST
Taught using the scientific method and real lab equipment, students formulate a hypothesis, perform the experiment, and then use the results to determine whether their hypothesis was correct. With a special emphasis on forms of energy, including, nuclear, carbon-based, solar and wind power these labs are designed to "WOW!" the student, sparking curiousity and a desire to know why. During the lab, the students work interactively, taking notes and answering questions in their lab manual. Optional lab kits are available to complete about half of the labs hands-on.
PRINTABLE WORKSHEETS, LAB MANUAL AND GLOSSARY
Following each lecture a worksheet is completed, which provides an opportunity to apply the new information. Lab activity sheets are completed as students watch the video lab and work interactively, taking notes and working problems. A glossary is also provided for defining terms.
VIDEO SOLUTIONS ENSURE UNDERSTANDING
Dr. Shormann provides video solutions for every question on the worksheets and lab activity sheets. He works each complex concept step by step on the digital blackboard. Teaching the how and the why, he ensures understanding of every concept.
QUARTERLY EXAMS PREPARE FOR COLLEGE
Every 8 weeks there is an exam. Quarterly exams promote study habits similar to what a student should expect in college, where exams are given infrequently and cover a large amount of material. On the week of the exam, no other work is assigned. If you would like a Pre-AP course, we recommend giving the exams traditionally with a one hour time limit. If you prefer a regular high school course, you do the exams open book, open note, or with a "cheat sheet". At this level we like the "cheat sheet" method because it best teaches students how to prioritize and organize the information, providing an easier transition from weekly to quarterly exams.
Q & A EMAIL SERVICE PROVIDES A LIFELINE
While our program is very comprehensive, occasionally a little extra help is needed. Students and parents can email Dr. Shormann directly anytime they have a question concerning the course. Emails are answered within one business day or less.
GRADE CALCULATOR CALCULATES GRADES IN A SNAP
Simply type the homework and exam grades into the provided spreadsheet. It will automatically weight and calculate the overall grade for the course. Grades can be entered daily, weekly, quarterly, or yearly.
FREE INTERNET TEXTBOOK FOR ASSIGNED READING
To prepare for the lecture, a reading assignment is completed. This can be done using our Internet Textbook, a chart with links to internet sites to the weekly reading assignments. These websites were specifically chosen by Dr. Shormann to fulfill the required reading. If you prefer a traditional textbook, we recommend Bob Jones Physical World. However, since we have a reading syllabus for just about every publisher, you can choose any textbook you like. SEE READING SYLLABI.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
The course is set up on a 32 week schedule with an average of two video lectures, two worksheets, 20 definitions, and one lab to complete each week. Every 8 weeks there is a quarterly exam. The lecture and lab videos average 30 minutes each, but don't forget to add time for pausing, rewinding, and note-taking. This is what a typical week would look like:
DAY 1: COMPLETE DEFINITIONS & ASSIGNED READING
DAY 2: LECTURE 1, WORKSHEET 1, WATCH VIDEO SOLUTIONS FOR MISSED QUESTIONS
DAY 3: LECTURE 2, WORKSHEET 2, WATCH VIDEO SOLUTIONS FOR MISSED QUESTIONS
DAY 4: WATCH VIDEO LAB (HANDS-ON NOT REQUIRED), LAB WORKSHEET, VIDEO SOLUTIONS
EVERY 8 WEEKS : QUARTELRY EXAM -NO OTHER ASSIGNMENTS
